DemonMinds your portal to horror since 1997!
In 1997 DemonMinds was born as an online horror publication--or e-zine, or whatever your noun of choice may be. In short, we publish horror related material, but our mission is much more than that--we treat horror as a way of life, not just a paycheck like so many other publishers. This turns out to be a benefit for those passionate about creating horror related material...especially the writer, our favorite particular artist. Many authors, poets and artists have started careers in horror at DemonMinds; perhaps you are the next contributor?
As a non-conventional publisher, we provide many opportunities for authors, poets and artists to stretch artistically. We are funded from small advertising proceeds, and merchandise sales. DemonMinds is not a full time, income based, enterprise so we can publish what we want. Second, we pay authors, poets and artists for work, but only those that are the very best for the month....the so called features. This means that we have a two tier publishing focus. We have professional level tales, and novice tales all published in the same edition. For the author/artist this means you have the opportunity to show your work along with professionals in the field.
The above sounds very interesting, but what does it mean? It means that DemonMinds is serious about promoting horror and that we are passionate about helping the novice get a start. Many consider writing, but where to start? Some publishers are very impatient with the novice writer...or the occasional veteran....who doesn’t know how to format a submission, or who many not have a firm grasp of writing principles. We all begin at some point. There is no moral failing in being a novice, the moral failing comes from refusing to learn--but where do you learn? To address this need, DemonMinds includes an educational component for the write --The Writer's Forge.
Our advice to the beginning writer: practice, learn how to write, learn how to submit, and develop a thick skin. The only thing that can't be learned is passion for horror, and passion for creating. Steven King's first three novels were rejected, so you can imagine that getting published will require work. Patience is required: your dreams of full time writing may be several years away--keep working on it. Too many writers quit after a rejection or two--if you can't take rejection, don't plan on becoming a writer. Most of us have dozens, if not hundreds of rejection letters stored in a box someplace...why do we save them? We're writer's! We save rejections so at some point we can pull them out during an interview and say, "so and so at some magazine refused this Edgar winning story five years ago..."
The staff at DemonMinds regularly postpone their personal writing projects to promote other author's material, all in the name of altruism. No one on our staff is getting rich, in the end, DemonMinds costs more than it makes when considering staff time, equipment and required services, but we are still here. If you believe you have something to offer, we always accept offers of help from talented individuals, you may e-mail us here to volunteer. We are currently looking for technically astute individuals with marketing talent, or attractive, young, swedish women who think horror writers are gods....either one will do.
So there you have it--a brief description of DemonMinds. If you would like further information, would like to submit a horror piece for consideration, want to advertise with us, or you want to volunteer at DemonMinds, please contact us at submissions@demonminds.com . Address your queries to J. P. Moore, editor.
